Have you ever felt the Alchemy of Sisterhood?
Personally I’m a bit more on the loner side.
I’m definitely an extroverted introvert! Can I get an Amen, Sistah?!
In my past, friendships were H-A-R-D, especially with other women. But I find the more I courageously show up as myself that, like the saying goes: My Vibe Attracts My Tribe.
One of the biggest things I am now grateful for is Sisterhood.
That’s a term that, I find, gets tossed around quite readily these days. But what is real Sisterhood?
Well, first it gets me thinking of what it is not. Ever hear of the myth of the Golden Apple?
Just so we start on the same page let’s talk about what a myth is first. A myth is similar to a fable or folklore in that it is a traditional story, generally explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. They help us (in story form) understand human behaviour.
Back to the Golden Apple…
…Sh*t hit the proverbial fan when Eris, the goddess of discord, realized that she had not been invited to a wedding.
Eris was so pissed about being excluded that she went to the wedding and threw a golden apple onto the banquet table. The apple was addressed to “the fairest of them all” (see any Disney parallels?!).Three goddesses began bickering over and claimed the beautiful golden apple: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
Zeus decided to bow out of a “pronouncement” so left the decision to Paris the Trojan Prince. Hera and Athena tried bribing him with power and glory. BUT Aphrodite? She offered him the love of the legendary beauty, Helen of Sparta.
Besides all of the misogyny rampant in this myth (that’s for discussion at another time), this in-fighting began the Trojan war.
It symbolizes women tearing each other down.
Have you ever had a friend who couldn’t stand your success?
Or a sister or mother who constantly picked apart your perceived faults?
This is NOT Sisterhood.
What is Sisterhood? In my belief, it’s about emboldened female relationships.
Emboldened meaning a confident, bold relationship where both women show up in their own power and in no way diminish the other.
Where we empower each other instead of disempower.
Most recently an example of this could be seen in the Lady Gaga/Pink Superbowl kerfuffle. After Lady Gaga’s Superbowl performance the main fuss was a bunch of people picking apart her (apparent) “beer gut” THEN when this wasn’t getting much traction, people started insinuating that Pink would have issue with Lady Gaga repelling into the stadium because that was her (Pink’s) “thing”.
BEFORE this went too far (the very night these poisonous whispers began) Pink got in front of this fabricated story and praised Lady Gaga’s performance and moxy, and said that she (Pink) didn’t “own” the art of repelling.
THAT my dears exemplifies women lifting each other up.
Wouldn’t having that experience more often than not in your life change everything?
This is why the Sisterhood of the Modern Priestess journey is so important.Because it is a place to practice emboldened female connection and community while creating a sacred container for practice.
Where we celebrate, stumble, witness, and dance alongside each other.
Filled with a community of like-minded and hearted women. Who get it. And who “get” you.
